New Zealand entomologist George Hudson made the first serious proposal in 1895 to give him more daylight for bug-collecting. Germany became the first country to implement DST in 1916 to save energy during World War I, with most warring nations following. The US adopted it nationally in 1966 under the Uniform Time Act. The current second-Sunday-in-March start date dates to the 2005 Energy Policy Act, which extended DST by about a month.
