The history of Easter Sunday
Easter follows the resurrection account in the gospels, traditionally dated to the Sunday after the Jewish Passover. The Council of Nicaea in 325 AD set the rule of "first Sunday after the first full moon on or after the spring equinox" so all Christians would celebrate together; that rule still governs Western Easter dates. Eastern Orthodox churches use the Julian calendar to calculate, so their Easter often falls a week or more later. Easter became a major commercial holiday in the 19th century with chocolate eggs (Cadbury in the UK) and the Easter Bunny tradition imported from Germany.
How Easter Sunday is celebrated
Sunrise services, egg hunts, chocolate eggs, the Easter Bunny, lamb dinners in Greek and Italian traditions, and bonnet parades. The White House Easter Egg Roll has happened on the South Lawn since 1878. In Greece and Eastern Europe, painted red eggs symbolise the blood of Christ.
