The history of Good Friday
Christians have observed the day of the crucifixion since the earliest centuries of the church. The English name "Good Friday" likely comes from "God's Friday" or refers to the holy nature of the day; in German it's called Karfreitag ("sorrowful Friday"), in French Vendredi saint ("holy Friday"). The day is a public holiday in the UK, Germany, Australia, Canada and many other countries, but not in the US at the federal level (some states observe it).
How Good Friday is celebrated
Many Christians observe the day with fasting, reflection and church services, including the Stations of the Cross. In Catholic and Anglican traditions there's no celebration of the Eucharist on this day. In the UK, hot cross buns are eaten, and the Bermuda kite festival takes place because the diamond shape symbolises the cross.
