The history of Presidents' Day
The holiday began in 1879 as a celebration of George Washington's February 22 birthday, the first US federal holiday to honour an individual. The Uniform Monday Holiday Act of 1968 moved it to the third Monday in February, taking effect in 1971. The federal name is still officially "Washington's Birthday", though most states and the public call it Presidents' Day, broadening the meaning to include Abraham Lincoln (Feb 12) and all presidents.

How Presidents' Day is celebrated
Government offices, banks and the stock market close. Retailers run heavy sales on cars, mattresses and appliances, making it one of the biggest US shopping weekends. Some schools take the week off as a winter break.
Did you know?
The federal name is still officially Washington's Birthday, not Presidents' Day.
Because the holiday falls between Feb 15 and Feb 21, it can never actually land on Washington's real birthday of Feb 22.
The Uniform Monday Holiday Act of 1968 also moved Memorial Day, Labor Day and Columbus Day to Mondays.
