The history of Super Bowl Sunday
The first Super Bowl was played on January 15, 1967 between the Green Bay Packers and the Kansas City Chiefs as the championship of the merged NFL and AFL. The name "Super Bowl" came from then-Chiefs owner Lamar Hunt watching his children play with a Super Ball toy. The game has been held annually ever since, moving from mid-January through early February as the NFL season expanded. Since 2022 the schedule has settled on the second Sunday in February.
