The history of Mother's Day
Anna Jarvis organised the first US Mother's Day service in West Virginia in 1908 to honour her late mother. President Woodrow Wilson made it a national observance in 1914. Jarvis later turned against the holiday she had founded, furious at the commercialisation by florists, candy makers and card companies, and spent the rest of her life fighting to abolish it. The UK's Mothering Sunday, originally a Christian celebration on the fourth Sunday of Lent, became conflated with the American Mother's Day in the 20th century.
How Mother's Day is celebrated
Cards, flowers (especially carnations, Jarvis's mother's favourite), brunches, breakfast in bed and phone calls to mum. It's the busiest day of the year for many restaurants and the third-biggest day for greeting cards.
