The history of Valentine's Day
The day is named after one or more early Christian martyrs called Valentine. The romantic association probably grew in the late Middle Ages, with Geoffrey Chaucer's 14th-century poem "Parlement of Foules" linking February 14 to courtly love. The first known Valentine note, from Charles, Duke of Orleans, was sent from the Tower of London in 1415. Mass-produced Valentine cards arrived in the 1840s, pushed by American entrepreneur Esther Howland. Today it's one of the largest greeting-card occasions on the calendar, second only to Christmas.
How Valentine's Day is celebrated
Cards, flowers (especially red roses), chocolates and romantic dinners are the staples. Many couples use the day to get engaged or married. In Japan, women give chocolate to men on February 14, and men reciprocate on White Day, March 14.
