The history of Veterans Day
World War I ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918. President Wilson proclaimed November 11 as Armistice Day a year later to honour those who had served. Congress made it a federal holiday in 1938. After more wars produced more veterans, Congress renamed it Veterans Day in 1954 to honour all who served, not only WWI veterans. It briefly moved under the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, but returned to November 11 in 1978 because the original date carried historical weight.
Also known as: Armistice Day, Remembrance Day (UK, CA, AU)
How Veterans Day is celebrated
Two minutes of silence at 11:00 AM, ceremonies at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington, parades and free meals at restaurants for veterans are common. Many people wear red poppies, a tradition from John McCrae's WWI poem "In Flanders Fields".
