The history of Father's Day
Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington proposed the holiday in 1909 to honour her father, a single dad of six. The first Father's Day service was held on June 19, 1910. It struggled for decades to gain federal recognition, partly because it was seen as redundant after Mother's Day and partly because of resistance to the commercialisation it would bring. President Lyndon Johnson designated it in 1966, and Richard Nixon made it a permanent national observance in 1972.
How Father's Day is celebrated
Cards, ties (the classic gift), tools, electronics, golf and grilling. Many treat it as a low-key day with family barbecues. It's also the busiest day for outgoing phone calls in the US, though traditionally lower-spending than Mother's Day.
