The history of Independence Day
The Continental Congress voted for independence from Britain on July 2, 1776 and approved the Declaration of Independence drafted by Thomas Jefferson on July 4. Philadelphia held the first organised celebration in 1777 with bonfires and bells. Congress made it an unpaid federal holiday in 1870, then a paid one in 1938. By coincidence, John Adams and Thomas Jefferson both died on July 4, 1826, exactly 50 years after the Declaration was approved.
